Overview:
Udine, Italy, From a topographical
point of view, Udine is like a city that spreads from the center
outwards, beginning from the focal, panoramic point, the hill
with its Castello from here upwards, the city dominates and on
clear days, one can see from the plains in the south almost as
far as the sea in the north, from the anfiteatro morenico to the
tops of the Alpi Carniche in the background. Seen from the
nearby hills instead, gives you the impression of being able to
hold the whole of the city in your hand.
Udine is a
well-to-do and industrious city with all the virtues and vices,
the values and contradictions of a provincial city. It could
make the leap of being a high profile city, but courage and
perseverance is needed to attain this status. The people of
Udine sing the praises of their city, “calling it the capital
of Friuli”, and yet they use a veneto dialect instead of a
Friulian one, (maybe because it gives a sense of exclusiveness,
distinguishing them from the surrounding area), they exalt the
efficiency of their services and the middle-eastern style, but
do not manage to give as much value to their own culture and
local talents, letting them fall by the wayside.
