Overview:
Dundalk, Ireland, about
half way between
Dublin
and
Belfast
, lies the northernmost town of the
province
of
Leinster - Dundalk
. The greater
Dundalk
area has strong connections with the mythical hero Cuchulainn
who is said to have lived in the area.
Dundalk
is also of Norman foundation and grew up around the Motte and
Bailey of Castletown. The town was a significant market town
throughout the middle ages. Today
Dundalk
is the administrative centre of the county. For centuries
initiative and industry have been part of local life in
Dundalk,
testament to its continual growth and the enterprise of its
inhabitants. Impressive buildings line the streets and fold
around the corners of its gentle streetscapes. The splendid
County
Museum
is housed in a renovated 18th century warehouse and the newly
refurbished Tain Theatre hosts a wide variety of performances
all year round, from drama to opera to ballet. The town boasts a
range of quality accommodation and a superb choice of leisure
and conference facilities.
Dundalk is
the principal centre in the middle of the East Coast. Within a
30 mile radius there is a population of 428,000. A 50 mile
radius brings in Ireland’s two main cities, Dublin and
Belfast, increasing the catchment to in excess of 3 million.
Dundalk is located on the M1/N1 National Primary Route
equidistant between the two cities. It is also served by an
excellent inter-city rail network. Dundalk is very
advantageously positioned in relation to international airports,
which are located to the north of Dublin and the south of
Belfast.
